Moto's miserable slide in the handset space had resulted in the firm putting its phone division up for sale last year, but in October it said it would delay the spin-off.
Now Motorola spokesman Rusty Brashear has said: "Even though we greatly slowed the process we never stopped it."
The firm's presence at MWC and CTIA was woeful, with a tiny selection of very outmoded-looking handsets on display. Moto has, however, committed strongly to Android and will release a number of devices later this year.
