Long tail fails to wag.
Distimo's newest report paints a top-heavy chart-dominated picture of the app stores that will surprise few seasons industry watchers.
It found that 20 per cent of all free apps and 80 per cent of all paid apps have been downloaded fewer than 100 times on the Google Android Market worldwide to date.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, 96 apps have been downloaded more than 5 million times in the Android Market, with Google Maps achieving 50 million plus.
The report concluded that it is more difficult for apps on Android Market than Apple App Store to monetise using a one-off fee.
It said that only two paid apps have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google store against six for iPhone.
