Should Tim Cook and Larry Page be getting together to clink glasses of champagne this week? Admittedly, it's an unlikely prospect, but the CEOs of Apple and Google do have a joint milestone to celebrate.
According to app-tracking startup Appsfire, more than one million apps have now been released across iOS and Android - 52% on the former and 48% on the latter.
CEO Ouriel Ohayon points out in his blog post that only 80% of those are still active, so there aren't actually one million available on the stores right now – that's the next milestone. Another caveat is that apps available on both platforms will have been counted twice in this total.
Oh, and another caveat: ME's daily scan through new apps released on both stores indicates that well over 90% of them are, frankly, rubbish. But at that ratio, we're still talking about more than 100,000 interesting and innovative apps having been released since the launch of the App Store in summer 2008.
