More than 8m Brits now play mobile games

Sony Ericsson still top dog in terms of number of gamers.

More than eight million people in the UK play games on their mobile phones, according to the latest UK National Gamers Survey Report.

53% of mobile gamers are male and 47% are female, while 39% of them are aged 20-34 - stats that correspond to general assumptions within the industry.

Interestingly, the report also breaks down how many gamers the various handset brands have, and what percentage of them pay for games:

It shows how Apple is doing a far better job of persuading users to buy games - a testament to the App Store if ever we saw one.

iPhone helps bump O2 up to top the list of UK operators when it comes to mobile gaming, with 2.4m gamers, of whom 67% pay for games - this includes iPhone users, though, who don't buy their games from O2 itself.

Orange and 3 both have 50% of their mobile gamers paying for games, but Vodafone and T-Mobile have only 38% and 33% respectively, according to the survey.
