MONETISING MOBILE: SoundHound talks audio recognition

How your phone can 'hear' the message.

Audio recognition company SoundHound is best known for its music app, which is one of the rivals to Shazam in helping people identify songs that are playing around them. The company's VP of sales and marketing Katie McMahon took the stage at Monetising Mobile in London tonight to talk about another aspect of the company's business though.

"While we think music recognition is phenomenal, we think voice is truly the major mover inside this decade in how we will interact with connected devices," she said. "It's tough stuff, and that's why it's not ubiquitous right now... There's a whole variety of voice services, and they're hard to deliver properly."

McMahon explained how SoundHound matches sounds with sounds, rather than converting them into text or other formats in between. She demonstrated a voice search for 'I Got It From My Mama' by Will.I.Am in SoundHound's separate Hound app, which was impressively quick.

"That is faster than Googling! It is the fastest music search in the world," she said, encouraging people to try the same query on their Android handset - with Google's own voice recognition technology - for a comparison.

McMahon also had an announcement to make: Hound is available today in the UK for the first time, having launched in the US earlier this year.

Where is this going? "In the future, the question will become the stickiest user habit ever," she said. "I'm just going to pick it up [the phone] and speak my search... The revolution in mobile in the 2000s was touch. Inside this decade, you won't see it."
