Modu makes cutbacks

A wave of laudatory hype has not been enough to save Modu from some drastic cutbacks.

The Israeli hardware company, which built a tiny phone that can slot inside 'jackets' to make other consumer devices mobile-connected, was the hit of last year's Mobile World Congress. But now, according to Intomobile, it has laid off 100 workers - that’s about 25 per cent of its staff.

Modu’s CEO, Dov Moran, recently admitted the firm will launch its first devices in April 2009, six month late. Israel’s Cellcom, Italy’s TIM and Russia’s Vimpelcom will be first to commit.
