MobiTV debuts offline storage features for mobile TV service

It's all about the DRM, baby...

MobiTV has unveiled a new feature in its B2B mobile TV platform that will let people store shows on their handsets to watch offline.

The PVR-esque feature is down to new DRM, which will also let MobiTV's operator customers run subscription, rental and content metering models with their mobile TV offerings.

The DRM will also let them allow users to share content across multiple devices.

"It was imperative for us, as multi-screen distribution becomes core to our business, to create a solution that allows for consumption of content on multiple screens and platforms, whether someone is on a plane or sitting in front of their home television," says VP of technology Cedric Fernandes.

The company says the big deal with its new DRM is that it works across these various platforms, rather than requiring different DRM systems for each.

The news is part of a wider trend for mobile TV to move away from the linear, 'watch whatever's being broadcast right now' model, towards a more interactive, time-shifting format. Just like regular TV, in fact.
