Mobilizy launches AR navigation app for Android

Who needs maps when you can overlay driving directions on your smartphone's camera feed?

Austrian firm Mobilizy has launched its latest augmented reality application for Android: Wikitude Drive. Based on the company's existing Wikitude AR browser, the new app is aimed at drivers.

In short, rather than show real-time directions on a map, it overlays them on the handset's camera feed. The app pulls navigation data from the internet, and will support voice commands from users.

"Wikitude Drive is part of a natural evolution in mobile augmented reality," says CEO Philipp Breuss-Schneeweis. "I believe there is much more to AR than simply planting coloured POIs [points of interest] on a cam-view. People want to know how to get to these POIs, and Wikitude Drive shows the way."

Mobilizy says it's working on social features for future releases, including possibly linking up with mobile social networks. It also says that Wikitude Drive will work with existing navigation systems like NavTeq and TeleAtlas.

The company hasn't announced a launch date or pricing details for the new application, but it has published a YouTube video demo.
