The latest breathless estimate of the m-commerce channel, this time courtesy of Gartner.
The firm says mobile payment users worldwide will surpass 141.1m in 2011, a 38.2 per cent increase from 2010.
They will transact $86.1 billion, up 75.9 per cent from 2010 volume of $48.9 billion.
Gartner is realistic about NFC, saying that mass market adoption of NFC payments in developed regions is at least four years away.
This means that the majority of the market today comes from purchases made via mobile apps like eBay and Amazon. They alone will account for 90 per cent of all mobile payments transactions in North America and 77 per cent in Western Europe.
The analyst also flies a little against the tide by stating that developing markets, despite favorable conditions for mobile payments, offer no guarantee of success.

Gartner says money transfers and prepaid incentives will drive transaction volumes in these markets. In Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, these two services will account for 54 per cent and 32 per cent of all transactions in 2011 respectively.
Last week, Juniper estimated that the total transaction value of mobile payments would hit $670 billion by 2015.
