Mobile operators set for EU showdown

Last ditch meetings due today in an effort to avoid routing charge reductions.

A group of mobile operators comprising Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), France Telecom (Orange), Vodafone and Telefonica is meeting with the European Commission today in an attempt to halt routing fee reform.

As part of EU proposals set to come into effect over the next three years, operators could see call routing fees (i.e. what they charge other operators for routing  calls/data across their networks) cut by 70 per cent.

With such fees accounting for as much as 20 per cent of operator revenue, many are saying the plan will put a curb on investment and end up with higher charges for the end-user.

For its part, the EU maintains that the high fees will hold back investment in high-speed networks.
