Security threat posed by open platforms is all too real.
Figures from security specialist G Data said malware was up nearly three times on 1H2010, and found unsurprisingly that Android was the chief target.
In the first half of 2011, researchers recorded one new malware strain every twelve seconds on average – 1,245,403 altogether – and it's getting worse.
Mobile malware identified includes NickiBot and Google++, which gathers info such as call log and GPS tracking data, and sends it to the attacker.
Others, like Zsone, effectively work like the old text subscription scams by hacking in to subscription registrations send registering them with expensive Chinese premium SMS numbers.
McAfee data recently showed the amount of Android focused malware was up 76 per cent in Q2 of 2011, when compared to Q1.
