Berg Insight says that market was worth 205m euros in 2010, and estimates that 20 per cent of all subs in Europe already use some kind of location-enhanced application on a regular basis.
Foursquare? Poynt? Proximity Moments?
Berg reckons take-up will be faster In North America, thanks to a larger installed base of GPS-enabled handsets.
It estimates adoption at about one third of mobile subs, but says competition in the space will chip away at revenues such that the CAGR will rise just 2.3 per cent from $620 million in 2010 to reach $710 million in 2016.
Revenue won't be helped by the switch from premium fees to ad-funding, and the move towards free in the SatNav space.

"The installed base of GPS handsets in Europe has reached 35 percent of total handsets and surpassed 70 per cent in North America."
