Mobile health market to be worth $400m by 2016

Mostly because of wearable devices telling you ill you are.

ABI says the sports and health mobile app market was worth $120 million in 2010, but is due a growth spurt.

This will be due mostly to home monitoring systems for ageing users, personal emergency response services, and remote healthcare monitoring applications.

But sports and fitness will also play a major part, thanks to a proliferation of wearable connected Bluetooth devices.

And it reckons that the makers of these devices – Garmin etc – will increasingly have to compete directly with the mobile handset itself, and a bunch new start-ups.

"Downloadable apps are moving the sports tracking device market from proprietary devices to mobile phones, but adoption has been limited by the data they can collect.

"However, with the connectivity that Bluetooth Smart will embed in mobile handsets, wearable devices will bring greater detail to mobile handsets," said Jonathan Collins, principal analyst.
