Mobile entertainment market to hit $53.9bn by 2016

Colossal earnings, up nearly a third on 2011.

Remember the days when mobile was all about java games and wallpapers? Back then, analysts would rush out predictions of billions of dollars in revenue – and it all seemed like sci-fi.

Well, now those revenues are real, and the projections are multiples of ten higher than they were.

And here's a good case in point.

Canada's IE Market Research Corporation looked at 50+ countries and conducted interviews with approximately 50,000 consumers to come up with the numbers, which aggregate revenue from mobile music, mobile gaming, mobile personalisation, mobile TV and other premium content.

It is predicting revenue to rise from $39.6 billion in 2011 to $53.9 billion in 2016 for a CAGR of 6.3 per cent.

A little surprisingly, it expects music to see the biggest growth from $9 billion in 2011 to $18 billion in 2016. This may be because of the relative failure of the medium historically and the relatively recent enthusiasm for streaming services.

The firm is also hot on India, because of the regions entrepreneurial publishers and lack of stringent regulations. It precasts that total revenue in India's mobile entertainment market will rise to $1.79 billion in 2016, significantly up from $670 million in 2011 (CAGR of 18.2 per cent from 2012 - 2016).
