Mobile data traffic overtakes voice

Ericsson research shows that data traffic has grown 280% in each of the last two years

The amount of of data being transported across mobile networks has eclipsed voice for the first time, according to measurements from Ericsson.

The company took readings from live networks around the world and found that the crossover occurred at approximately 140,000 Terabytes per month in both voice and data traffic.

Ericsson's findings show that data traffic grew 280 per cent globally during each of the last two years, and has forecast that it will double annually over the next five years.

The company says mobile social networking sites and mobile broadband-based PCs now account for a large percentage of mobile data traffic.

For example, over 200 mobile operators in 60 countries are deploying and promoting Facebook mobile products, with over 100 million active users accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.
