Mobile data market to hit $87.7bn

Data services market – excluding messaging – to grow 26.2 per cent in 2009, says iSuppli.

The research firm says this contrasts with an overall mobile market that will remain roughly flat at approximately $866 billion in 2009.

It also anticipates the data market total will keep growing, reaching $188 billion by 2013.

The report contends that data revenue growth hinges on success in broadband access, apps and content, consumer mobility, and 'mature' billing capabilities.

"Clearly, mobile data revenue is key to the continued health of wireless carriers and the cell phone value chain in the future," said iSuppli director and principal analyst Dr. Jagdish Rebello.

"In this battle, ownership of customers and who can monetize data services and applications are up for grabs."
