Mobile data demand up 500 per cent on 3UK in 2011

80 terabytes used on New Year's Eve alone.

3UK says smartphones and Facebook were the contributing factors that helped data use grow across 12-months and power a surge on the close of 2011.

Its smartphone customers used 14 terabytes on New Year's Eve in 2010, which grew to 80 terabytes in 2011.

2012 started well for the firm too. 74 terabytes were used on New Year's Day, which was up from 14 terabytes for the same period in 2010.

As people celebrated the turn of the year, Facebook saw a 20 per cent growth in traffic between midnight and 1am.

3UK has predicted smartphone adoption among its customers to reach almost 100 per cent this year. This, comes in light of recent results which show a trend with all demographics understanding the benefits of the devices.

In addition to data growth, SMS figures grew from 36 million on New Year's Eve 2010 to 46 million in 2011. Calls also increased marginally from 19 million to 21 million.

Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director, 3UK, said: "It's a phenomenal amount of growth and shows just how much smartphones are changing the way our customers communicate. This kind of demand vindicates Three's focus on building a network designed for the internet.

"It also shows just how important data bundles are becoming – and of course the value of plans which offer genuinely all-you-can-eat handset data allowances."
