Place your bets. The scramble for 'first mover' advantage in mobile gambling has begun. Within the last few weeks two more firms, Spin3 and Cometa Games, have launched into the space.

The gambling industry is watching mobile closely, attracted by the ubiquity of the device, the success of web-based play and the liberalisation of laws in many Western countries.

Cometa has just launched its Arcadia casino system, which allows users to register personal information and payment details before downloading games direct to their phone via SMS.

Meanwhile Spin3's Gamewire offers casino operators, networks and any company with an Internet presence six real-time networked casino games. The application is designed to mesh with online products and has already been signed by Ladbrokes.

Matti Zinder, CEO of Spin3, believes mobile gambling is the way forward - not least because it can be embraced by other sectors: "It’s area with huge potential because it's not just about pure gambling products. We can offer our engine to games companies who want to put gambling functionality into sports games or similar."

Juniper reasearch forecasts that mobile gambling revenues will reach $16bn by 2008.
