Although whether that's worth trumpeting is another question.
A new report commissioned by GetJar claims that mobile apps will be generating $17.5 billion of revenues in 2012.
That's based on nearly 50 billion app downloads - up from seven billion in 2009. Advertising is expected to account for 28% of those 2012 revenues.
However, GetJar's claim that apps will be outselling CDs in 2012 is more about grabbing headlines.
It's based on music industry body IFPI's prediction last year that the CD market will be worth $13.83 billion in 2012.
UPDATE: GetJar's release claims that its research is using figures from music industry body IFPI predicting CD sales of $13.83 billion in 2012. However, the IFPI has told ME that it didn't make this prediction - so we've contacted GetJar to get the actual source for the figure.

Yet sales of CDs are in sharp decline - a more relevant comparison would be to digital music sales in 2012, if you want a true picture of how the mobile apps market compares to music.
Still, the report - which was commissioned from Chetan Sharma Consulting - has plenty of other data to chew over.
For example, it claims that by 2012, off-deck (i.e. non-operator) paid apps will account for 50% of all apps revenue, with operator app stores generating 23% of revenues.
The report predicts that Europe will generate $8.5 billion of app revenues in 2012, compared to $6.7 billion for North America. leaving only $2.3 billion for Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa combined - which seems bafflingly low.
GetJar also says that the number of app stores jumped from eight to 38 in 2009, with more to launch this year. CEO Ilja Laurs thinks many won't last though.
"This report signifies a battle for survival of the fittest among app stores worldwide – with app revenue and growth opportunities growing significantly," he says.
"There is no way that this many app stores will survive in the long term and while the value of the global app economy is set to be astoundingly high by 2012, we think only a few app stores will share this revenue."
