Mixed Media Labs raises $5m for Picplz photo-sharing app

And future apps too.

US mobile startup Mixed Media Labs has announced a $5 million Series A funding round, led by Andressen-Horowitz.

The company's first launch is photo-sharing app Picplz, which is available for iPhone with an Android version on the way.

It lets people apply visual filters to their photos, then upload them to PicPlz's servers with a geotag, while also pushing them to Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

The app is competing with Instagram and Phototreats, which have both been extremely popular on the App Store.

Mixed Media Labs' CEO is Dalton Caldwell, who previously founded and ran streaming music startup Imeem. He started his new venture with Imeem CTO Bryan Berg.

"With a few exceptions, we’ve re-formed the core engineering team that created the imeem mobile service for Android and iPhone," blogs Caldwell.

"We’re taking everything we learned and will apply it to products that come out of Mixed Media Labs."

VC Marc Andressen is joining the company's board as part of the funding deal.
