Microsoft shows off prototype HP slate at CES

Windows 7 powered device going on sale later this year.

As predicted, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off a tablet device during his CES keynote speech last night - but it wasn't the long-rumoured dual-screen Courier.

Instead, it was a prototype 'slate PC' made by HP, running the Windows 7 operating system.

"They're more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC," said Ballmer. "Perfect for reading, surfing the web and taking entertainment on the go."

As you can guess from that quote, the tablet will allow users to read e-books, use the internet, access their videos and music, as well as do computing tasks via the on-screen keyboard.

The device is expected to go on sale later this year, although no details of pricing have been announced. It's likely to face stiff competition from Apple's iSlate, although the latter has yet to be formally unveiled.
