Steve Ballmer lays it on the line at VC summit, and Twitter lets the world know.
There are no shortage of critics lambasting Microsoft's sluggishness with Windows Mobile in recent times.
Its app store is launching after most of its rivals', and version of 7 of Windows Mobile isn't expected to debut until next year - leaving many of its handset partners shifting to Android.
The latest critic is close to home, though: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. He admitted to attendees of the company's Venture Capital Summit on Friday that Microsoft has made mistakes with its smartphone platform.
Journalists weren't invited, but Twitterers who were ensured his words have received a wider airing. "Ballmer says they screwed up with Windows Mobile. Wishes they had already lauched WM7. They completely revamped the team," tweeted venture capitalist Paul Jozefak.
Meanwhile, another Twitter user quoted Ballmer as saying "we've pumped in some new talent" and "this will not happen again".

Microsoft is certainly playing catch-up in the smartphone war - a feeling only strengthened when the company announced plans to bring its Silverlight application platform to Windows Mobile 7,before Windows Mobile 6.5 has even been released.
