Microsoft launches Bing app for BlackBerry handsets

Well, the two Storm phones, anyway.

Microsoft has announced that it's developed a dedicated BlackBerry application for its Bing search engine.

"We’re happy to share that the Bing for mobile application is available on the brand new Verizon BlackBerry Storm 2, and is now rolling out to Verizon BlackBerry Storm 1 users," says a post on the official Bing blog.

"Simply go to the Bing icon on your device to use the app."

Icon on the device? Yes, it seems that Verizon Wireless has pushed the Bing for Mobile app out to owners of the two Storm handsets - which should drive takeup faster than simply making it available in an app store, albeit at the risk of being seen as intrusive by users.

Microsoft says the app provides speedy access to maps, driving directions and traffic info, as well as local businesses and voice search.

Last week, the company launched its new Bing mobile internet site, so mobile is clearly a priority for the fledgeling search engine.
