Microsoft demo hints at PC/Xbox/mobile cross-platform games

So that's how Windows Phone 7 Series interacts with Xbox...

When Microsoft unveiled its Windows Phone 7 Series OS at Mobile World Congress, many of the details were deliberately vague.

Particularly when it came to its integration with Xbox Live: the company plans to tell developers more about making games for its new OS at this week's Game Developers Conference and its own MIX event.

However, Microsoft's Eric Rudder has given a sneak peek to the TechEd Middle East conference, showing a single game running on PC, Xbox and Windows Phone.

What's more, players can switch between all three platforms at will - the example quoted by Rudder involved starting a game on a work PC, continuing playing it on a phone on the way home, then switching to Xbox.

The game was developed in Microsoft's Visual Studio development platform, with 90% of the code shared between the three different versions.

It's an impressive demo, although developers may face a challenge producing a game interface that can work as seamlessly across three very different control mechanisms (keyboard/mouse, touchscreen and joypad).
