metaio launches free AR tools

Newest version of a SDK that already powers over 70 apps and drives more than 10 million downloads.

metaio is one of the original AR pioneers, best known for its browser, junaio, was built on the metaio Mobile SDK. It first announced its intention to go free with its tools in September.

Now, the platform has been launched. It's available to iOS and Android developers, and will enable gravity-aware AR experiences, a 3D rendering engine and visual tracking technology for 2D and 3D objects, which three times more robust than the previous version.

At the same time it provides developers with a plugin to make use of the Unity3D gaming engine.

metaio believes the new features will ensure AR experiences that are more natural, more intuitive, and more realistic than before.

They have already been implemented by brands, agencies and developers to build 70 apps.

The decision to go free by metaio is an attempt to broaden adoption of AR among the mainstream of developers. It plans to monetise the tech by offering a pro version for those who want to add advanced features, greater customisation and get direct support by the metaio development team.

In the longer term, metaio expects technical developments will keep AR pushing into the mainstream. It has formed alliances with chipset firms ARM, ST Ericsson and Texas Instruments  to ensure that next generation mobile devices are fully AR capable.
