MeMeTales and RRKidz set sights on book-apps for kids market

Two more startups looking to educate and entertain children on their smartphones and tablets.

Two more startups have launched into the book-apps for kids market: MeMeTales and RRKidz. Both are hoping to capitalise on the trend for parents to share smartphones and tablets with their children, or buy them their own app-capable devices.

MeMeTales has already launched its reading app for iPhone, and according to VentureBeat it has been downloaded more than 25,000 times, with stories read in it more than 100,000 times.

Children can read books or listen to voice narration, with gamification features including points, stickers and unlockable games all thrown in to keep their interest up. MeMeTales has a publishing tool for authors to add their stories to its platform, which was unveiled this week at the Demo conference in Silicon Valley.

Meanwhile, RRKidz has a famous name at the helm: actor LeVar Burton, who'll be familiar to millions from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

His new venture has raised $3 million for its own enhanced reading platform, which is aiming to have more than 300 books available to read when it launches on iPad and Android tablets.
