Intel teams with Limo Foundation to present next generation of OS, 'Tizen'.

On Monday, Nokia began shipping its MeeGo N9 device, prompting much speculation about what would happen the sidelined OS it created with Intel.

Then rumours emerged that Intel and Samsung were cooking something up.

Now comes confirmation that the Linux Foundation (led by Samsung, but also comprising Fujitsu, Panasonic, NEC, Motorola, ARM and others), Intel and the old MeeGo team are working on the 'Tizen' platform, which will carry over MeeGo code, focus on HTML5-based apps and work on a variety of device types.

The new platform is expected to be released in Q1 2012 in both OS and SDK form.

It raises a number of questions: what would happen to Samsung's bada OS? Can Intel overcome scepticism about its ability to launch after the MeeGo adventure?

Imad Sousou, co-chair of the MeeGo Technical Steering group, said: “We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5.

"Shifting to HTML5 doesn’t just mean slapping a web runtime on an existing Linux, even one aimed at mobile, as MeeGo has been.

"Emphasizing HTML5 means that APIs not visible to HTML5 programmers need not be as rigid, and can evolve with platform technology and can vary by market segment".
