Meego accelerates into the in-car space

In-vehicle entertainment body selects platform for its next release.

The GENIVI Alliance chose the multi-device MeeGo OS because of its belief in open-source.

It should be a boost to the Nokia/Intel OS, which is defined by its ability to work well across smartphones, notebooks, tablets, TVs and other devices.

So MeeGo will provide the base for the upcoming GENIVI Apollo release. Graham Smethurst, president of GENIVI, said: “We selected MeeGo as the open source basis for our platform because it is technically innovative and can provide the cross architecture build support we require for our references,.

"Working with MeeGo we expect to establish a solution that effectively merges IVI needs with those of the other MeeGo target device categories.”

The whole in-car area is potentially massive, offering the prospect of car owners downloading entertainment and transport-related apps direct to their dashboards.

What could put the brakes on it is the manufacturing timescales – by the time a car goes from design to manufacture, there will have been generations of advances in mobile functionality.
