Huge deal with chipset maker takes social network to vast numbers of emerging markets consumers.

MediaTek's chips take smart features to low end devices that retail sub $50. They offer features such as color interfaces, cameras, video recorders, QWERTY keypads and dual SIM capability.

Meanwhie its Runtime Environment was inside over 500 million units in 2010. The tech is designed to help app makers develop products for 'smart feature phones'.

It's this feature that will embed Facebook – a remarkable coup for the social network.

MediaTek is currently working with Spice Group and Micromax in India, Cherry Mobile in the Philippines, and Nexian in Indonesia to roll out their mobile solutions in these key markets.

Last year, phones powered by MediaTek chipsets represent over 40 per cent of the overall Indian handset market. With the launch, it is expecting more than half of its customers in India to adopt its MRE solution.
