Founder and chairman of GetJar reflects on ME Awards success.

Having been acknowledged for his considerable impact upon the mobile industry with the Outstanding Contribution award at last week’s 2012 ME Awards, GetJar founder and chairman Ilja Laurs speaks to Mobile Entertainment about what it means to receive such an accolade.

As the chairman and founder of the world’s largest independent mobile app store, Laurs’s knowledge and industry expertise is immeasurable. Since launching in 2005, GetJar provides app distribution to around 450,000 developers, from one-man shops to global brands, such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook.

Commenting on his Outstanding Contribution award success at the ME Awards 2012 last week, Laurs said: “It’s really awesome. The mobile industry rocks, it really is the best industry in the world and to be a part of that industry is extremely honourable.”

He also reflected on what he views as one of the key moments of not just the past 12 months but of his entire career. “Earlier this year we launched a virtual currency called GetJar Gold, and in the past two weeks we celebrated over 60 million users. That is something that I’m really proud of.”

Despite enjoying such a successful 2012, Laurs is reluctant to rest on his laurels, setting the bar particularly high with his ambitions for 2013. “The virtual currency opportunity is a particularly big one. We already have 60 million users and I really hope we can reach 300 million users next year.”
