McDonald's hails success of its recent Foursquare promotion

Social location? They're lovin' it.

Fast-food chain McDonald's increased Foursquare foot traffic to its US stores by 33% earlier this year, simply by offering free food.

The company dangled the prospect of $5 and $10 giftcards for people checking in on Foursquare on one day in April, and saw a rush of interest as a result.

McDonald's head of social media Rick Wion said at a conference this week that the company spent just $1,000 on the campaign.

"I was able to go to some of our marketing people - some of whom had never heard of Foursquare - and say, ‘Guess what. With this one little effort, we were able to get a 33% increase in foot traffic to the stores’," said Wion.
What's more, McDonald's added 600,000 fans on various social networks as a result of the promotion. $1,000 well spent, seemingly.
