mBlox takes sender pays model to US

Transactions firm launches cross-operator 'Free to End User' message service with stateside businesses.

The service enables businesses to communicate with consumers using SMS messages that are free of operator charges.  This allows content providers to absorb the cost of the messages on behalf of users.

Most US subscribers pay operator charges to send and receive text messages, either on a pay-per-use basis or through a monthly message plan. This initiative moves SMS closer to email in terms of cost and user-friendliness.

It also furthers mBlox’s ongoing campaign to champion ‘sender-pays data’, which it is trialling in the UK.

“The launchis significant because it unlocks a host of compelling new applications for SMS messaging,” said Brian Johnson, SVP Americas and APAC sales and marketing, mBlox.

“This service has enormous potential for businesses to use SMS as another important tool to reach customers more effectively by changing the dynamics of messaging.”

The solution launches first on T-Mobile and AT&T, with plans to roll out to other operators. FTEU text messages are already being used in customer support activities at by financial institutions.
