m-commerce marketing expense to hit $15bn in 2012

Up 50 per cent from 2011.

UK-based analyst firm Juniper Research says marketers globally will collectively spend $15 billion on m-commerce campaigns.

As it stands North America and Western Europe are seeing a faster growth in numbers than the Far East and China, according to the report.

The analyst hails smartphones and tablets for expanding the opportunities of shoppers and marketers alike.

The report claims the mobile devices and accompanying technology has helped advertisers use new methods, while consumers are able to access more information for special offers, such as opt-ins and location-based services.

"Each side has to keep up with the other and gain an advantage in order to clinch the purchase transaction in their favour."

Juniper goes on to say m-commerce methods such as NFC have the potential to provide rapid innovation, but cautions that advertisers should only use the appropriate options to connect with users.

It warns firms not to assume apps will solve marketing needs and opt-in methods must earn subscriber trust. Sounds appropriate as many consumer issues with m-commerce seems to be security fears.

IBM recently predicted that m-commerce traffic is set to more than double this holiday season as 15 per cent of US consumers who log onto retail sites will do so via mobile.
