Social location service Loopt has launched version 4.0 of its mobile app, with several new features added.
They include simpler background location sharing, allowing Loopt users to allow close friends and family to track their location persistently, rather than rely on check-ins.
Loopt is also adding text to its existing Ping messages which request a friend's location, adding a map to help friends find one another.
The new app also has a Notifications feed of activity, including 'hot' places near a user's current location, based on the check-ins of friends and the wider Loopt community.
Alongside the new release, Loopt has announced that it is 'migrating' its separate Loopt Star rewards app into the main Loopt service.

It's starting the process with music: Loopt users who check in to US bars can bag free songs from Universal Music Group artists like Lady Gaga and Florence and the Machine.
Loopt plans to host a series of gigs in New York, San Francisco and Atlanta to promote these deals.
"When our users open Loopt, they see the world in a more relevant way," says CEO Sam Altman.
"We continue to work at surfacing interesting information that makes Loopt like x-ray vision, where you can see through city walls and find something compelling, whether it’s being alerted that an old friend is nearby, or that there’s a café around the corner frequented by friends."
