Lonely Planet freebie sparks 3m iPhone downloads

There's a silver lining to every cloud of volcano ash.

Lonely Planet's iPhone apps have been downloaded more than three million times since 13 of them were made free earlier this week, the company has announced.

Its travel guide apps for 13 European cities were switched to free in the wake of the volcanic ash cloud that's laid waste to flight schedules in the last week.

"The rate at which the iPhone city guides have been downloaded has been phenomenal," says Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall.

The offer ends today, but Lonely Planet says it's now dropping the price of ALL 32 of its iPhone app guides to £2.99, from their regular price of £9.49.

"We have had a fantastic response from travellers and want to continue to support them through this extended offer which now covers 32 cities across Europe," says Hall.
