O2 UK strikes network coverage deal with the Glasgow Subway and says London could be next.
O2 has become the first UK mobile operator to offer coverage on underground public transport after inking a deal with the Glasgow Subway.Despite being underground customers will now still be able to use 3G services such as video, internet access, content downloads and MMS. Voice and text too.
The contract, negotiated with transmission provider Arqiva and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), will see O2 coverage installed in five of Glasgow’s busiest Subway stations - Buchanan Street, St Enoch, Kelvinbridge, Hillhead and Partick.
The service will go ‘live’ in December 2008. O2 says the scheme could pave the way for a rollout in other underground stations/networks around the country, including London.
Derek McManus, O2's CTO said: “This new technology will enable customers to make calls, send and receive text messages and access a host of data services while on the subway platform.
