LG puts Dolby in multimedia handsets

Surround sound jumps out of the living room and on to mobile phones.

Tired of the kids on the train playing their crappy music through a mobile phone? Well get ready to hear those tunes in surround sound.

South Korea's LG will be the first handset vendor to embed the Dolby Mobile solution on globally available devices (the tech can already be found in a few handsets in Japan only).

The first models will be on the market in 4Q08 and will include capabilities such as Mobile Surround, Sound Space Expander, some nasty bass, EQs and a mono-to-stereo converter.

LG says it opted to put Dolby tech into its upcoming multimedia handsets with a view to offering audio capabilities more akin to a dedicated MP3 player or PMP.

Speaking at an unveiling in Seoul this morning Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile, said: “Being the first company to incorporate Dolby Mobile technology into handsets reinforces LG’s role as a leader in the mobile industry and in multimedia phones. We believe this technology will raise the bar for audio quality on handsets allowing us to continue to bring innovative products to the mobile phone industry."
