LadyGeek report highlights female app economy

Women over 55? There are apps for them.

LadyGeek and SixthSense have teamed up to publish a report called The Female App Economy, which reminds the mobile industry that app stores aren't just a man's world.

The report is based on a survey of 16,810 smartphone owners. LadyGeek has pulled out some of the stats for smartphone-owning women aged 55 or older:

  • 39% of them have downloaded one or more apps to their handset.
  • Nearly one in five of them say games are their favourite kind of apps.
  • Facebook is the most popular application for this demographic group.
  • 22.5% of them found out about their favourite app from a friend, compared to 12.9% of 55+ male smartphone owners.

Those ladies who lunch? They're swapping Doodle Jump tips! Possibly.

The report sounds like it will shatter some lingering stereotypes about the apps market, anyway.

"We are so obsessed with youth and yummy mummies in this country we forget that a third of our population is over 50", explains LadyGeek founder Belinda Parmar.

"The women we spoke to loved what ‘apps’ could do for them whether it be ’snacking’ on a 10 min Bejeweled game or updating their Facebook page with new photos."
