July 1st launch date for HP Touchpad

First tablet computer powered by webOS will cost $499.99 on US debut.

The new device will join a crowded marketplace already occupied by iPad, numerous Android machines and RIM's PlayBook.

HP says it will start taking orders on June 19th in North America and Europe.

The wi-fi version will launch first in the US, followed by the UK, Ireland, France and Germany a few days after.

Later in July will come launches in Canada with Italy, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore following later in 2011.

What a test this will be for webOS, which HP bought when it acquired Palm last summer.

Technically, this web technology based OS has its supporters, especially in the developer community, but can it get any consumer attention in a market awash with platforms?
