Jesta switches off Bitbop

Pulls the plug on the mobile video service.

Moconews has reported that the service has been canned and all staff laid off.

Thus ends the Bitpop dream to create a streaming and download TV service for mobile that could take on Hulu, Netflix and the rest.

It also marks another failure to build on the legacy of what was once one of the giants of the mobile content sector - Jamba.

Jamba, the Crazy Frog ringtone maker, was bought by Verisign, which sold it to News International, which re-named it Fox, which sold it to Jesta.

Fox created Bitbop and sold it on to its new owner, but the service never flew, not least because it didn't ever get its own iPad app. Moconews reckons it had 20,000 subscribers.

And so after all this time it's Jesta Digital's Jamba ringtones business that remains the core of the operation.
