The Japanese are to get their first ‘kamishibai-style’ mobile picture book.

Mobile phone novels have become incredibly popular in Japan. Last year a novel by Moshimo Kimiga, written entirely on a phone and pushed to mobile, went on to sell more than 420,000 copies once converted into hardcopy format.

Now a Japanese printing company has debuted the first mobile picture book. It will a frame at a time by clicking from page to page. They will costs 100-200 yen each and the company hopes to have 50 titles by September.

The format is based on the kamishibai picture book, which was invented by 12th century monks and remains a Japanese tradition to this day.
