Ryu Murakami's A Singing Whale bypasses traditional publisher process.
A Singing Whale will be available for 1,500 yen (about $17) from the iPad store.
It's a multimedia work, featuring video content and music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, so it's hardly a project that could be replicated in traditional formats.
Murakami is a major literary figure in Japan, probably best known to Western audiences for writing the book upon which the acclaimed horror film Audition was based.
He's not related to Haruki Murakami, the writer of surreal works like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
