Dentsu survey reveals boom in consumer mindset around smarter mobiles.

Japanese agency Dentsu has published its annual Hit Products in Japan report, analysing what products have been particularly popular for consumers there in 2010.

The research is based partly on an internet survey carried out earlier this month, and partly on analysis of buzz on blogs.

Smartphones come top of the list, up from 34th spot last year. They are followed by Twitter in second place (up from 104th) and, ahem, 'Munchable chilli oil" in third spot.

Tablet devices are a new entry in 19th place.

Dentsu has also published a list of predicted hit products and services for 2011 and onwards.

It sees smartphones in fifth place, behind the Toky Sky Tree, LED lightbulbs, electric vehicles and international flight services at Haneda Airport.

E-book readers are equal seventh place, with tablets in tenth, and cloud computing down in equal 18th.
