Japan says sayonara to 2G era

Japan has completely given up on 2G handsets, with none being delivered to stores in January.

Manufacturers sent 4.08 million phones to Japanese stores during the month, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association. But all were 3G devices.

By the end of February, nearly 85 per cent of Japanese subscribers were carrying 3G or equivalent devices. DoCoMo’s own 3G services, FOMA, passed 40 million subscribers in October 2007. Millions of Japanese subscribers use their phones for advanced services such as one-seg TV broadcasts.
