Japan handset sales plummet

Japan handset sales plummet

Shipments down nearly 60 per cent in October to the lowest ever monthly total.

Reuters reports that 1.08 million mobile handsets were shipped in Japan during October, down 58 per cent from 12 months earlier and the lowest figure since the Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association began records in April 2003.

The slump has been attributed to a combination of poor economic conditions and the introduction of a new business model whereby operators are charging more for handsets in return for lower call charges.

Last month Nokia confirmed it would be pulling out of the Japanese market with the exception of its high-end Vertu devices, which may form the basis of an MVNO launch early next year.
