Is Nokia preparing a bid for Palm?

Is Nokia preparing a bid for Palm?

No, probably not. But shares soar on rumours of a takeover.

Palm’s stock was up 90 cents, or about 8 per cent, at the weekend as the firm prepared to launch the Pixi. This is the second phone, after the Pre, based on its revamped webOS operating system.

Ever since Palm burst back into the phone biz it's been linked with would-be purchasers, notably Dell and Motorola. Observers are dubious about the Nokia link, given that Nokia already has established OS systems like Symbian and Maemo.

And Palm has hardly been pulling up trees. After a decent start in the US, sales have slipped. The device is currently going on sale in Europe, but Palm does not have the brand cache in Europe that it does across the pond, so it will be a tough sell.
