Is Google mandating Google Wallet in its app store?

Developers say they've been told their apps will be removed if they use PayPal, Zong, Boku et al.

Reuters has reported that Google is pushing developers towards Google Wallet as the only payments option on Android Market, now known as Google Play.

Naturally, the developers don't like it, as Google Wallet is more expensive to use than some other channels and is relatively under-used by the public.

The move would seem to go against the open policy of Android, which has traditionally welcomed third party services. But it seems that Google wants to elevate its own payments method to the ubiquitous and trusted status of iTunes.

It also wants to simplify the store, and claims higher adoption of Google Wallet could improve rev shares.

In one email sent to a developer in late August, Google said the developer had 30 days to comply, otherwise the developer's apps would be "suspended" from Android Market.

Reuters spoke to social games firm Papaya, which said it has now dropped PayPal and Zong in favour of Google Wallet for in-app billing, she said.
