Is Android truly open?

Is Android truly open?

Eyebrows raised at Moto's 'exclusive' on Android 2.0.

CrunchGear wonders why Motorola was able to launch such a highly regarded piece of kit as Droid sing 2.0 when manufacturers like HTC, LG, Kyocera, and Samsung are still labouring with 1.5.

It claims a source close to Google said that the search giant directly assisted Motorola and Verizon in building the Droid’s software – and that this sort of assistance is unavailable to other manufacturers. It raises the question 'how open in Android?' And does this development fly in the face of the original ethos behind the OS?

Improvements featured in 2.0 include support for Microsoft Exchange and Facebook, faster browser and Google Navigation, which is available as a free service on top of Maps.

CrunchGear says there is rising unrest about this supposed preferential agenda, but that manufacturers are afraid of Google and fear being cut out of the upgrade process.
