Retro fever to strike the App Store.

iPhone is set to become an even bigger platform for retro gaming, with news that two Final Fantasy games and a Sega Genesis emulator are coming to the App Store.

Publisher Square Enix revealed the news that Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are being ported to iPhone by posting a series of screenshots on its Facebook page.

No release dates or further details have been confirmed, however.

Meanwhile, Sega has announced plans to release an official emulator for its Genesis console - which was known as the Mega Drive here in Europe.

Ultimate Genesis will be launched at the start of February with one embedded game - Space Harrier II - and an in-app catalogue of other titles to purchase and download.

They'll include Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force - some of which are already available as standalone games for iPhone.

Sega's app will be the second official emulator on the App Store, following Manomio's C64 application. Apple is currently only allowing official emulators with fully licensed games, in contrast to Google, whose Android Market has several popular unofficial emulators.

It's not clear whether Sega will release its app as Ultimate Mega Drive here in Europe.
