iPhone to blame for Windows Mobile shortfall?

Shipments of Windows Mobile-powered handsets in FY08 were two million units short of forecast.

Microsoft has failed to meet its sales target for Windows Mobile devices, conceding that in its fiscal year ending June 30th it sold 18 million licenses  - two million less than the 20 million it had predicted.

PC World reports In-Stat analyst Bill Hughes as saying the shortfall could have been due to the launch of iPhone 3G. He said: "The iPhone 3G is causing people to hesitate... [but] that doesn't mean those two million all went to the iPhone."

Another analyst, 451 Group's Chris Hazelton, theorised that a delay in the launch of Sony Ericsson's much-anticipated Xperia could also be to blame.
